Categories of countries to which holders of Greek passports can travel freely or for which they require a visa

The European Economic Area and the Schengen area

The European Economic Area encompasses all the EU member states. All Greek nationals, EU citizens (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Denmark, Esthonia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia,  Slovenia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland), as well as third country nationals lawfully resident (i.e. holders of residence permits) in an EU member state, have the right to move freely by simply showing their identity card or valid passport, according to the provisions in force on passport controls (see articles 4 and 5 of Council Directive 2004/38/EC).

The Schengen area includes Greece, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, and EEA states Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland (the latter has not yet fullly implemented the agreement).

Greek nationals, holders of valid identity cards or passports, can travel to these countries without being subject to controls other than an identity check by competent authorities or transport companies upon departure.

Third Countries (outside the EU and the Schengen area)

Holders of Greek (diplomatic, service, or other) passports can travel to those countries that require a visa or those that do not. Visa requirements are set out in the table below:
