Journalist: What issues did you and Ms. Rice discuss?
Ms. Bakoyannis: In a very friendly atmosphere, Ms. Rice and I discussed four basic issues. The first was the course of the negotiations with Skopje on the name issue. We also discussed the Cyprus issue. I briefed her on Greek-Turkish relations. And we also talked about the visa waiver, on which, as you know, discussions are in progress and we are entering the final stage. The discussion was sincere. We continued the discussions we had two months ago. As you know, Greek-U.S. relations are good – they rest on strong foundations, and we are continuing our meetings.
Journalist: Was there a more detailed discussion on the Skopje issue in view of Mr. Nimetz upcoming visit?
Ms. Bakoyannis: The discussion was a briefing. We told her that we are expecting Mr. Nimetz in Athens the day after tomorrow, when the negotiations will continue, and I expressed the hope that these negotiations have a positive outcome and that the Skopje side will abandon its pre-election rhetoric and get into the substance of the negotiations.
Journalist: Does the U.S. side persist in its view that by 9 July we might have …
Ms. Bakoyannis: No. No such issue was even mentioned.
Journalist: What did Ms. Rice bring to this discussion?
Ms. Bakoyannis: Ms. Rice has a thorough knowledge of the name issue and the Cyprus issue, which we discussed. She knows these issues well – she has dealt with them quite a bit. As you know, she is an experienced minister and is aware of the substance of the problems. Thank you very much.
