This visa entitles aliens who are required to hold such a visa to pass through the international transit area of airports, without actually entering the national territory of the country concerned, during a transit or transfer between two legs of an international flight.  It is an exception to the general rule that, in principle, the possession of a visa is not required to pass through the international transit area. The provisions in force on the obligation to be in possession of this visa are included in Annex 3 of the Common Consular Instructions of the Schengen member states.
