Two Events on Climate Change, Human Security and Children: Panel Discussion on “Climate Change and Children” in co-operation with UNICEF.
Both events were organised in co-operation with UNICEF, in the form of a panel discussion and media event. The events took place, in Bali on December 10th 2007, in the margins of the International Conference on Climate Change, and in New York on December 12th 2007, in the margins of the GA Special Session on Children. UNICEF presented its brochure on climate change and children, while a child representative in the GA Special Session on Children pled for collective action to contain the hazards of climate change. UNICEF also presented a special video prepared for and financed by the Greek Chairmanship of HSN. (For further information about the research conducted by UNICEF for climate change and children please see relevant presentation on the policy paper that is under preparation.
A special meeting with the accredited media representatives to the UN was well attended by journalists and UN delegations through the local UN network (for further information, please click here).
In the margins of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali, Indonesia, Foreign Ministry Secretary General for International Economic Relations and Development Co-operation and Special Representative for Climate Change, Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis had meetings with representatives from regional organisations with a view to promoting co-operation on programmes of adaptation to climate change, as announced by Foreign Minister Ms. Dora Bakoyannis in November 2007.
In particular, Mr. Skylakakis met with Ambassador Mr. Irwin LaRocque, representing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mr. Foday Bojang, representative from the African Union and with Chairman of AOSIS (Alliance of Small Island States), Dr. Angus Friday. These meetings set the foundations for Greek financing of relevant projects in less developed countries and regions, which are at increased risk to be affected by climate change due to their geographic location (Africa and small island states). This initiative was well received in principle by representatives from the three above-mentioned regional organisations, and it was agreed that contacts will be established between the competent bodies of these organisations with a view to the initiative's implementation.
